The Handshake Economy

Methodology: This study surveyed 3,005 small businesses to determine which U.S. and Canadian cities are most associated with trust-based, relationship-driven business culture in 2026. Respondents were asked to evaluate where they believe reputation, personal relationships, and community standing still carry the greatest weight in everyday business dealings, particularly among independent and Main Street storefront businesses. The sample was structured to ensure balanced representation across age, gender, household income, geographic region, and employment background. To strengthen statistical reliability, the research used a two-step methodology combining stratified sampling with post-stratification weighting, aligning the final dataset with national population benchmarks using internal demographic reference data. Conducted in May 2026, the study explores how Americans perceive business trust, local reputation, and community-based commerce at a time when many transactions increasingly rely on contracts, automation, and digital systems rather than personal relationships.
